The Most Effective Screen Time Passcode Is One You Can’t Remember

Apple's Screen Time is one of the most underrated features on the iPhone.

You can limit apps, schedule downtime, block distracting websites, and require a passcode before any of those restrictions can be bypassed.

There's just one problem.

If you know the passcode, those limits are only as strong as your willpower. When you're tired, bored, or procrastinating, it's far too easy to tap "Ignore Limit," enter the code, and keep scrolling.

I've found that the best Screen Time passcode is one you can't remember.

My solution is simple. I ask my wife to set the Screen Time passcode and never tell me what it is.

It works brilliantly because there's no way for me to override my own limits in the moment. The only downside is that she travels a lot for work, so when she isn't around I use a free tool called WaitToUnlock instead. Honestly, any method that keeps the passcode out of your head works.

The point is to add enough friction that you can't undo your own intentions in five seconds.

Most of us set limits when we're thinking clearly. We break them when we're acting on impulse. A Screen Time passcode you can't remember bridges that gap.
